FEES Pediatric On-Site Clinical Training

On-Site Pediatric Flexible Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing Program, Speech Pathologist will be trained in performing Pediatric Clinical FEES, over the course of five to seven days. With the On-Site Pediatric Flexible Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing Program, Speech Pathologist will be trained in performing Pediatric Clinical FEES, over the course of five to seven days. The age group of the subject, associated with this particular course, range from NICU to Adult Age (training is based on the hospital’s age group).

Speech Pathologist Clinical Training for Pediatric FEES includes the following:

  • The SEC Medical pediatric FEES specialist will establish the speech language pathologist(s), base line knowledge, and skill-set, in pediatric swallowing and its disorders. The specialist will assess each speech language pathologist’s instrumental dysphagia diagnostic techniques.

  • Each participant attending the pediatric clinical competency for FEES training will complete their Twenty-Five normal / abnormal endoscopy passes.

  • Safe passing and handling of the pediatric small diameter (pediatric) endoscope

  • Infection control compliance for FEES procedures, with all pediatric patients, in each setting within the hospital.

  • Identification of pediatric landmarks, structures, and the function of a pediatric swallow.

  • Identification of pediatric normal versus abnormal swallowing

  • Sensory testing reviewed

  • Accurate pediatric identification, of vocal fold mobility, and integrity

  • Bolus preparation and selection for liquids and foods

  • Bolus administration discussion with endoscopic procedures

  • Pediatric videoprinting, and capturing significant events, during the exam

  • Pediatric safe and correct positioning of the endoscope, during compensatory swallowing techniques, for the pediatric NICU or two to fifteen year and older patient age group.

  • Correctly identify the levels and degrees of penetration, aspiration of foods and liquids in the pediatric patient

  • Review of the provided SEC study materials/FEES lecture series begins

  • How to select the appropriate pediatric FEES patients(s), and how to establish physician and clinical physician specialists trigger guidelines

  • Review emergency procedures, for Epistaxsis, Vaso-Vagal Response

  • Speech pathologist will then perform endoscopic passes on pediatric patients, and adult volunteers, to complete the technical requirement of Dr. Susan Langmore’s requirements for clinical competency in FEES

  • Speech pathologist will need to pass written and technical exam

  • Suggested Continuing Education Conferences

  • All forms are to be included with documentation examples

  • Program pediatric policy procedures required to implement the program are included
